Can College Athletes Be Fired?

With the Name, Image and Likeness rules allowing college athletes to start making money while they are playing, and the overall professionalization of bigtime college sports, Doug wonders if we won’t get to a place where college players can be fired if they aren’t performing. These athletes have more power than they’ve ever had, especially considering the loosening of the transfer rules along with the NIL, and it’s only a matter of time before the pendulum swings back and the schools try to take their power back. Doug despairs for the future of amateur athletics in this new world we are creating.

Doug Gottlieb: “While we’re seeing coaches turnover quicker, buyouts be bigger, I think the next step is you’re going to see players get fired during the year, or get cut or whatever.”
