Stop Feeling Sorry For Josh Rosen's Career Trajectory in the NFL

Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold

The 2018 NFL draft was all about the quarterback position. In a draft that saw Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Rosen go in the first round, a majority of these players are now starting for their teams in the 2019 season. The odd man out is Rosen who was drafted to the less than adequate Arizona Cardinals.

Cardinals wouldn't let Rosen start until Sam Bradford proved to be completely ineffective but, Rosen's debut didn't make much of a difference either. Meanwhile, his peers in Allen, Jackson, Mayfield, and Darnold looked as if they were several steps ahead of him. Mayfield has become the new king of Cleveland. The Baltimore Ravens have gone all-in on Jackson's playing style. Buffalo Bills are pleased with what Allen is offering. New York Jets are definitely all-in on Sam Darnold and got him some help with Le'Veon Bell.

Rosen, however, got booted by the team that drafted him in favor of Kyler Murray and Kliff Kingsbury. Traded to the Miami Dolphins, he then has to compete for the starting job against Ryan Fitzpatrick. Despite Rosen having a more solid preseason performance, Fitzpatrick has been chosen as the QB to start and the media sees a bit of injustice for the young quarterback who's still finding his place in the league.

Ben Maller sees the Josh Rosen situation a lot differently. Maller thinks any sympathy for Josh Rosen is misplaced.

Ben Maller: You either have it or you don't have it. Josh Rosen is a guy that doesn't have it. When you're a top ten pick, you are given every advantage. Let's get out a really tiny violin for Rosen. In Arizona, he was drafted by the Cardinals and they wanted this guy and traded to get him. Then they wanted to give him the starting job but he got beat out by Sam Bradford...The Miami Dolphins coaching staff have called him out for poor body language. Rosen has been unacceptable and unsatisfactory as a quarterback. The Dolphins saw enough of Rosen in training camp to run for the hills. This is not someone you make a long-term investment in. The die has been cast...I don't think he even cares that much. He's lucky, he comes from wealth. Until he evolves and has a wake-up call, I see nothing to indicate that he's got it at all.
