Richland County Couple Recognized With Award

A Richland County couple, Bob and Katy Gardner, were recognized by Juvenile Court Judge Ron Spon for demonstrating extraordinary service and commitment to struggling youth in our community. The Gardner’s were chosen as the recipients of the “Love Never Fails” 2017 Award.

Judge Spon said that “Bob and Katy have unselfishly opened their hearts and home over many years by providing safe respite, love, and care to numerous abused or neglected children. The Gardners became certified foster parents in 2003 and have had over a dozen foster children in long-term placements. In addition to their three biological children, Bob and Katy adopted five other children into their family, and continue to provide respite foster care for other needy children. Beyond their family responsibilities, Bob and Katy also volunteer in the community, and encourage their children to give back to the community by serving with them.

The Award was presented at an award ceremony at the Richland County Juvenile Justice Center, 411 South Diamond Street, on Wednesday afternoon.

The “Love Never Fails” award is named in memory of Mrs. Bernice Murphy, who was the first recipient of the award in 2000. The award was created by Judge Spon to periodically recognize individuals in the Richland County community who exemplify Mrs. Murphy’s character and nevergive-up attitude toward struggling children. Patience, perseverance, commitment, valuing and supporting strengths, creating a sense of belonging, and developing generosity, are all traits which were easily identifiable in Mrs. Murphy’s relationship with at-risk children.
